A free Community Chili Fest and sporting goods/gardening items/tools/musical instruments exchange will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Water’s Edge United Methodist Church, 18732 Harbor Country Dr., New Buffalo
All members of the Harbor Country Rotary Club service area are invited (from the Indiana border to Browntown Road, from Lake Michigan to Dayton Road).
A variety of homemade chilis, tortilla chips, cookies, and drinks will be served. Bring your gently used sports equipment, tools, gardening items, and musical instruments. Participants can bring what they no longer need and/or take what they need. Any items left at the end of the evening will be donated to Harbor Country Mission.
The Rotary Club’s new bookmobile, a traveling free library, will also be on site.
A Dogs Gathering is planned for 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Chikaming Township’s Harbert Community Park.
Galien River Park hike
The Harbor Country Hikers will trek through Galien River Park in New Buffalo Township in the third of its annual fall visits to Berrien County Parks. The event starts at 2 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, Nov. 5.
County Parks’ Chief Naturalist Derek Pelc will lead the group on a slow, one-mile hike that should take about an hour-and-a-half.
The park is known for its canopy-level observation platform and its marsh-level boardwalk. It includes a mix of upland and wetland habitats along the Galien River and is a home and rest stop for many birds including bald eagles and Sandhill cranes.

According to Michigan Lottery, while no one matched all six numbers to win the Oct. 29 Powerball jackpot, two Michigan Lottery players were $1 million richer after the drawing by matching the five white balls drawn that night – 19-31-40-46-57.

Program on Gen. MacArthur
The Friends of the New Buffalo Library will sponsor a Community Forum program on the heroic but stormy career of General Douglas MacArthur at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, the eve of Veterans Day, at the library, 33 N. Thompson St.
The program will be presented by Tim Moore of Lake Michigan College. One of only six U.S. Army generals promoted to five-star rank, MacArthur led troops in combat in World War I, served as Army Chief-of-Staff in the 1930s, and directed the island-hopping strategy that helped defeat Japan during World War II.
Community Forum presentations are free and all are welcome to attend.

‘Being There’ at Film Group
The Harbor Country Film Group, sponsored by the Friends of the New Buffalo Library, will screen and discuss “Being There,” a 1979 comedy starring Peter Sellers, at its 6:30 p.m. Nov.14 meeting at the Library. 33 N. Thompson St.
The film is based on a novel by Jerzy Kosinski and stars, in addition to Sellers, Shirley MacLaine and Melvyn Douglas. All are welcome at Film Group meetings, and there’s free popcorn for everyone.
