International violinist and conductor Kunito Nishitani will star in an afternoon of "The Romantic Violin" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator, 14280 Red Arrow Hwy., Harber. Presented by the School of American Music, the program will showcase Europe's Romantic period of music, which burgeoned in the second half of the 19th century.

Nishitani will be accompanied on piano by world-famous composer Rudolf Haken in a program that includes Violin Concerto No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saëns, Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, and Csárdás by Vittorio Monti. Though the concert is presented by the School of American Music as part of its Free Family Concert Series, registration is requested online at schoolofamericanmusic.com.

New Buffalo Halloween Parade

The New Buffalo Community Halloween Parade will return on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Participants are asked to gather at the 100 block of North Thompson Street beginning at 2 p.m. (costume judging will began at 2:30 p.m. and the parade steps off at 3 p.m. for its journey to the fire station where goodie bags will be handed out).

Trick-or-treat in the city is set for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 30.

Oink’s Dutch Treat will provide a free cone to costumed children who stop by.

Chikaming Trunk or Treat

The fifth annual Chikaming Township Trunk or Treat is scheduled for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Township Hall, 13535 Red Arrow Highway, Harbert.

Candy, popcorn, treats and fun along with prizes for trunk decorations and a canned food drive are planned.

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead, All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, All Souls Day … all fall in successive days at the end of October through the first few days of November. All are days set aside to remember those we love, those who have inspired us, those who have guided us, those who have gone before us.

We will gather to remember and celebrate at noon on Saturday, October 29, at the Three Oaks Community Garden to create an ofrenda, a temporary altar to honor loved ones who have died. Please bring items of remembrance; photos, drawings, dolls, or personal items, to place on the ofrenda.

Film Group to meet

The Harbor Country Film Group will screen and discuss the 2002 film, “Whale Rider” at its 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 meeting at the New Buffalo Public Library, 33 N. Thompson St. Harbor Country Film Club meetings begin with a brief introduction and the screening of the film, followed by discussion. The meetings are free and open to all, and popcorn is always served.

Park hike

The Harbor Country Hikers will hike the trails of Madeline Bertrand County Park in the second of its annual fall visits to Berrien County parks. The event starts at 2 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, October 29, and is expected to last about two hours. Led by the Parks' Chief Naturalist, Derek Pelc, the 2.5-mile hike will take attendees through Madeline Bertrand's 121 acres of pine and oak forests, and along a bluff overlooking the St. Joseph River.

Weesaw Trunk-or-Treat

On Saturday, Oct. 29, from 5-7 p.m, Weesaw Township's Annual Trick or Treat will welcome the addition of Friends of New Troy Community Center's first Gather & Trunk-or-Treat!  

We will begin hosting treat-givers at 4:30 p.m. From 5:00 - 7:00 p.m, in addition to hosting Trunk-or-Treat, Friends of New Troy volunteers will offer hot chocolate, bottled water, light refreshments, and a heartier hot dog option at 13372 California Road.

Do you want to make a night of it? Then head to the Weesaw Township Fire Department at their station, 13518 State Street, New Troy, from 7-9 p.m. for their Annual Halloween Party. They will host costume contests, kids' games, hay rides, and more.

Church sale

On Saturday, November 5, Harbert Community Church will hold a Holiday Craft & Bake Sale, from 9 am to 1 pm. The church is located at 6444 Harbert Road in Sawyer at the corner of Three Oaks & Harbert Roads.

Senior Center craft show

Costume Parade

Precious in His Sight Childcare & Preschool at Trinity Lutheran Church will have their annual Falloween Costume Parade through downtown Sawyer on Friday, October 28th. Parents, grandparents & friends are invited to come out and watch. The parade will start at 10 a.m. beginning at the school.

Woodland Shores Trunk or Treat

Please join us on Sunday, October 30, from 4-6 p.m. at Woodland Shores Baptist Church in Bridgman for Trunk or Treat. This event is totally FREE, including cider and donuts, and you can register to win a Meijer Gift Card!  Bring the whole family and enjoy trick or treating in a safe environment.

Blanket project

The Harbor Country Rotary Club blanket appreciation project is seeking volunteers to help tie blankets to be donated to emergency personnel, senior citizens, Ronald McDonald House and others at the Three Oaks Township Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays.
