STEVENSVILLE — Lincoln Township is expected to add another major grocery chain to its Red Arrow Highway corridor later this year.

Building plans and a permit application were submitted to the township on April 14 for a 20,000-square-foot Aldi grocery store.

Building Inspector Jim Pheifer said he anticipates work to begin in early May on the 3-acre property at 5110 Red Arrow Highway. The parcel is just north of the Tractor Supply Co. store.

“These things don’t happen overnight. I’ve been talking to Aldi’s representatives for years,” Pheifer said. “We’ve been wanting them to come in. It just takes a lot of time for them to pick a spot. I’ve had businesses approach us and nothing happens. But now it seems like everyone is looking at us and are saying, ‘We want to be here.’”

Prior to the permit application, the township received a site plan for the project about two months ago. Pheifer said they’ve been working with them ever since.

The initial plan was revised by the township’s planning commission and approved toward the end of March. A letter of approval was sent to Aldi representatives, which led to the arrival of the building plan and subsequent permit this week.

According to the building plan, the 20,000-square-foot structure will have 100 parking spaces.

In comparison, the nearby Meijer is nearly 200,000 square feet. However, Pheifer said this falls within Aldi’s business model.

“Aldi does an awful lot of business in that amount of square footage,” he said. “It’s a standard Aldi. It met our landscaping plans and it’s going to be a nice addition to the community.”

The property is zoned commercial mixed-use.

While no formal timeline has been made available, Pheifer said he anticipates about a six-month build.

“Usually when I get plans like this, I give them a plan review as soon as I can. I expect them to break ground by the first of May,” he said. “It will take about six months – if that.”

After construction is completed, Pheifer said Aldi will spend about a month working on the interior of the store.

“It’s important to me, because I’d like to see my community grow along with these businesses,” Pheifer said.

The nearest Aldi grocery store is at 1700 Pipestone Road in Benton Township. The only other Aldi in the tri-county region is in South Haven.
