NEW BUFFALO — The last day of business for Captain Cook’s Sports and LakeView Venditions Specialty Gifts and Tanning in New Buffalo was Friday, Dec. 30, 2022.

Captain Cook’s Sports relocated to its South Whittaker Street location 30 years ago, selling fishing and hunting licenses, fishing supplies, and live bait. It shared the building with New Buffalo Electric Company and was managed by Ryne Folino, grandson of owners Bob Cook and Norma Cook.

LakeView Venditions and Tanning, owned by Norma Cook and managed by her daughter, Jan Folino, opened in 2006 as a video store and tanning salon. The video store was later transformed into a specialty gift shop and continued to operate as a tanning salon until it closed.

Many Cook family members worked at these businesses over the years and enjoyed serving the local residents, second home owners, visitors and tourists. The loss of the family patriarch, Bob Cook, earlier this year prompted the decision to close these two businesses and sell the building. New Buffalo Electric Company, owned by Bob Cook for 60 years, was sold earlier this year and is still operating under new ownership.

A final inventory reduction sale and “garage sale” including office, retail display items and other miscellaneous odds and ends was held at 400 S. Whittaker St. on January 5, 6 and 7.
