GALIEN — Eight-year-old Lily Mullen of Galien knows what it’s like to battle cancer.

Recently she joined efforts to support a friend from school who is being treated for another form of the disease.

Mullen, a second-grade student at Moccasin Elementary in Buchanan, has been fighting an aggressive form of kidney cancer (renal clear cell sarcoma) for the last 14 months. Lily and her family have received so much support from so many but two of Lily’s biggest supporters have been best friends and schoolmates Ollie and Gabe Gauthier.

In June 2021, Ollie, also 8, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

When Lily heard of Ollie’s diagnosis she told her parents Magen and Jason Mullen that she had to do something to help the Gauthier family like they had helped her in September of 2020 when the Gauthier boys organized a bake sale to raise funds for Lily and her family.

With help from family, friends and the community the bake sale was a huge success.

After much thought, Lily decided to sell wristbands in Ollie’s name. She designed, purchased, and began selling Olliestrong wristbands. With help from their community and a special teacher, Wendy Murphy, Lily has done great and is still selling the wristbands.

Although she was happy with the sales from the wristbands, Mullen felt like she could do more so she decided to open Lily’s lemonade stand with all proceeds going to Ollie and his family, On Sept. 10 she set up her stand selling LILYSTRONG shirts, wristbands, OLLIESTRONG wristbands, candy and lemonade. The lemonade stand was a huge success due to all of the support from family, friends and the community.

Still Lily Wants to do more. She is currently thinking of ideas for a future fundraiser. Her goal is to raise $3,000 for Ollie. Anyone who wants to help Lily reach her goal for Ollie’s fundraiser can contact Magen Mullen by phone at 269-697-9508 and leave a message, via email at, or through the mail at P.O. Box 151 Galien MI 49113.

A ”Superheroes For Ollie Gauthier Benefit” is scheduled for is scheduled for 4 p.m. to midnight Oct. 30 at the Lake Michigan College Mendel Center.
