Pajama Game

Michaela Hadaway, Alyssa Hyska and Kady Roberts perform a scene from LMC’s virtual staged production of “The Pajama Game.”

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – A union strike at a pajama factory generates plenty of steam heat in the toe-tapping, comedic love story, "The Pajama Game," a virtual staged production from Lake Michigan College's Visual & Performing Arts Department.

Originally planned as the Spring 2020 musical, LMC's production was halted two weeks before opening night due to the COVID-19 pandemic and state shutdown. The cast and crew have since recorded the musical, which will be streamed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.

"From start-to-finish, the musical has taken 11 months to take shape, but with all of the challenges, our cast remained almost entirely intact," said LMC Theatre Coordinator Paul Mow, who is directing the production. "I am so proud of the work that these talented LMC students were able to produce during this unprecedented time, and grateful for these students, the staff, and our administration for helping us follow through on this production."

With the help of videographer Brian Gaukel, the cast and crew recorded each line, each scene, and each sung phrase to assemble a giant video puzzle. Each actor sang their part individually in the LMC recording studio with Music Director Kris Zook. They also recorded their dialogue in costumed video shoots and their own lip sync video sessions over their recordings.

"The Pajama Game," from the team of Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, is brimming with songs and dances that have become musical theatre standards, including "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway."

The musical centers around the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, where sparks fly between new superintendent, Sid Sorokin (Martel Burton), and Babe Williams (Madison Jackson), leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 ½-cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor but a battle of the sexes as well.

The cast also includes Eric Thiele; Alyssa Hyska; Cooper Rellis; Michaela Hadaway; Kayla Cramatie; Madeline Schrock; Chris Preston; Will Turner; Madison Mosher; Zoe Downey; Kady Roberts; John Crumb; Adrian Keeler; Tavion Crump; Joanna Blue; Isabella LeClaire; Kate Mosher; and Jada Willis.

In addition to Mow, Zook, and Gaukel, the production team includes Patrick Ross (choreography), Julie Smiy (costume design), Gabby Smith (piano/accompanist), Les Rorick (associate producer), Susan Salas Graham (assistant director), Landon Horne (stage manager), and Mindy McCaffrey (visual and performing arts assistant).

A  streaming access code is required to view this scheduled content. Tickets are $15 for general access and free to LMC faculty, staff, and students.
