THREE OAKS — Tom Rosenbluth of the Harbor Country Rotary Club organized the donation of a math reference book (“Everything You Need to Ace Math in One Big Fat Notebook”) to help every sixth grade River Valley Middle School student with their math homework – or in some cases, help the parents help their students with math questions. He expanded the Rotary Club’s Literacy project, focused on providing reading books to New Buffalo and River Valley elementary students, since mathematics is also a language that students need to be able to read and there is a need for help with the specialized language of math.

The club plans to continue the donations to future sixth grade students to help with the critical transition to middle school mathematics. Patrick Bertrand, River Valley Middle School math teacher, plans to refer to the sections of the book throughout the year to give parents a heads-up on the math topics being discussed in class.

All the teachers in the math department reviewed the book, published by Workman Publishing. Sean Gedert commented that the book is very kid friendly with brief and understandable examples and explanations. Jeri Essig said her students will enjoy using the book. The enthusiasm for the project even spread to Principal Jim Polite.
