MICHIGAN CITY — More than 300 luminarias were lit up in front of the Michiana Humane Society on Sept. 26 during the annual Remember Me Thursday ceremony.

Executive Director Johanna Humbert said the international event is held not only to remember pets that have been lost, but also to shine some light on the shelter pets that never find homes.

“When we first participated in Remember Me Thursday six years ago nearly half of our shelter animals never found homes. Now I’m proud to say our placement rate is over 98 percent.”

Humbert thanked the volunteers who helped make the Remember Me Thursday event possible, Humane Society Board of Directors members, and shelter staff members (names are listed below).

“They spend their day caring for the animals,” she said of the Humane Society’s staff. “We have over 100 animals in the shelter right now.

“They do it every day, seven days a week, without a complaint, because they love the animals.”

In addition to the many pets memorialized by the lighted luminaries, two were placed in front to honor former board members Carl Golightly and Dave Moon “who were instrumental in the campaign that built this building (located at 711 Highway 212 in Michigan City) over 20 years ago.”

Humbert said so many people dedicated luminarias to their pets this year that more tea lights had to be bought and extra bags had to be found.

During the opening Remember Me Thursday ceremony, Humbert read the following “A Prayer for the Animals:”

Hear our humble prayer for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to sleep to end their misery. We entreat for them all of them the world’s mercy and pi. And for those who care for the animals we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals,  and so to share the blessings of the merciful. Amen.
