NEW BUFFALO — Redamak’s 2021 opening day took place on April 1, and it was no joke for those who stood in line to get their first “Hamburger that made New Buffalo famous!” of the year.

Amber Lanz and Matt Wapinski of Chicago were among the first in line.

She said the traditionally make it to Redamak’s on “opening day and closing day.”

Lanz was ready to order ‘the cheeseburger with Velveeta” while Wapinski was going to get a “double burger, The Legend.”

Mark Schult, the first customer to order at the new streamlined carry-out window, said he’s been on a diet since the beginning of December.

“I’ve lost over 40 pounds, and this is my treat.”

Administrative Assistant Katie Maroney said this is Redamak’s 46th season, adding that waitress Deb Robertson is beginning her 40th year.

Robertson said she’s happy to be back.

“Let’s get it done, and hopefully we’ll be 100-percent and back to normal,” she said. “I love my job, love the people I work for.”

Maroney said texting has been added to let customers know when their carry-out orders are ready. She said some other new services are planned in the near future.

“We’re just happy to be open … and looking forward to a good weekend,” she said.

As of April 1 the restaurant (located at 616 East Buffalo St. in New Buffalo) was operating at 50 percent capacity with a maximum of six diners per table.

Maroney said spring hours are Thursday through Monday noon to 9 p.m. (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

“We hope to switch back to our seven days a week after Memorial Day,” she said.
