THREE OAKS — Longtime Three Oaks United Methodist Church organist Martha Spychalski played her final service on Sunday, May 5.

She recently announced her retirement after 30 years.

“I’m so grateful to both my children (Michelle Heit and Paul Siegmund) and my husband (Tom) for putting up with so many years of my doing this. And I’ve enjoyed every second of it.”

Spychalski said it will be sad to leave, but also nice to be able to travel on weekends without having to line up a replacement.

When the Staff-Parish Relations Convener Robert Tatina announced in church that “after blessing the congregation with organ and piano music for 30 years, Martha was retiring.” There was an audible gasp.

Before starting as Three Oaks UMC organist after Easter in 1989, Martha was the organist for over 10 years at New Buffalo UMC.   A search for a new organist is underway and auditions were planned on May 5.
