NEW BUFFALO — A 53-year-old Indiana motorcyclist was seriously injured on Saturday, May 25, when he lost control on the eastbound I-94 Exit 4 off-ramp in New Buffalo.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department reported that emergency response units were dispatched to the accident at 6:36 p.m. at the off-ramp that leads to U.S. 12 heading toward Three Oaks and Niles. Upon arrival, units found that a motorcycle had crashed and the driver was unconscious.
Police said witnesses reported the motorcycle seemed to be going too fast to negotiate the sharp curve of the exit. The motorcycle ran off the roadway, crashing in a ditch and ejecting the driver from the bike.
Police reported that Daniel Francis of Shelby, Indiana (the only occupant of the motorcycle), suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to Spectrum Lakeland of St Joseph. Francis was not wearing a helmet.
The crash remains under investigation and it was not known at the time of the press release if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
