River Valley Superintendent Will Kearney during the June 22 Zoom Board of Education meeting.

THREE OAKS — River Valley Schools Superintendent William Kearney received a grateful send-off during the Board of Education’s June 22 regular meeting.

Board Vice President Vickie Wagner said Kearney is “leaving the River Valley School District a far, far better place” in regards to the physical plant, academic status, camaraderie of the staff, and school pride.

“You’re a change-maker, and we needed change …  thank you,” she concluded.

David Whitlow said Kearney really helped him adjust to being named board president before presenting him with a gift from Bass Pro Shop (Kearney noted that he broke his chair on the last camping trip).

“Thank you everybody, I’m glad I had the opportunity to work here — it was good,” Kearney said.

Kearney was hired in 2011 and his last day was June 30, 2020.

During a January 2020 interview Kearney said “I’ll just miss the people — from the community, the students, the staff, the administrators and the board.”

“The students are great, very respectful. I think the relationships that the administration has with the teachers, and that the teachers have with the students, is really strong.”

Business Manager Brian Brown (named interim superintendent during the June 22 meeting) later said Douglas Scott Bojanich (chosen unanimously for the position during a June 10 special meeting) is tentatively scheduled to start at River Valley on July 20 following board approval of a contract.

The meeting also included information on Afternoon Summer Camp (slated to include cooking, gardening and exploration, and funded partly by The Pokagon Fund); a new Park & Read program involving reading in local parks on Wednesday mornings starting July 1; and the extensive planning that has gone into preparing for the start of school in the fall (anticipating both in-school and remote possibilities) shared during reports from elementary principals Heidi Clark and Patrick Zuccala and Middle/High School Principal Pat Breen.

And the board reviewed a Parent Survey Overall Report (which can be viewed at
