NEW BUFFALO – The artwork of fifth-grader Max Gotcher will soon be a prized possession of many residents of the New Buffalo Area Schools District.
During the Monday, July 22, Board of Education meeting, Gotcher’s design was named the official logo for the 2019-20 season pass to NBAS community events.
Superintendent Jeff Leslie announced that Gotcher’s design was selected from more than 50 entrants in this year’s contest. He cited the design’s inclusion of sports, drama and music along with the school’s Bison mascot as the elements that put his design on top.
The pass can be obtained by any resident with proof of residency at the district exercise facility or the superintendent’s office in the Clay Street facility. The pass allows free entry to all school-sponsored events such as basketball, football and volleyball games, plays and concerts and other special events. This is the third year of the program, instituted to show the district’s appreciation of its taxpayers’ support.
Also on July 22, the board accepted the high bid of $308,000 from Alan Palmer and William Lindblom for this year’s Building Trades house at 17670 Summerhill Lane. The minimum bid was $291,000 for the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house.
The roster of returning coaches for the 2019-20 season was approved by the board, including: Vance Price as varsity cross country (boys); Ed Fidler, middle school cross country; Matthew Johnson, varsity football; Paul Keller, varsity football assistant coach; John Visel, varsity football assistant coach; Jeffrey Olson, middle school football; Erik Beers, head coach varsity soccer (boys); Nicholas Talbott, assistant varsity soccer (boys); Pano Arvanitis, middle school co-ed soccer; Natalie Walter, middle school co-ed soccer; Amy Ingle, varsity tennis (boys); Kevin Labaj, varsity head coach volleyball; Kelsie Shutz, junior varsity volleyball; Karla Madison, 7th grade volleyball, and Luis Sanchez, 6th grade volleyball.
In other business, the board recognized Lori Gramelspacher, accounts payable clerk, for meeting the requirements for Chief Financial Officer certification awarded by the Michigan School Business Officials and hired Caroline Fortunato as secondary social studies teacher and Robert Hauch as instructional assistant paraprofessional.
Board Member Heather Black said the Bison Boosters had a successful start to its “Donuts on the Dock” fundraiser in the New Buffalo Yacht Club parking lot. She said the group will be selling donuts there throughout the summer on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. Funds raised by the sales will help fund the snacks given to athletes during trips to away games and other events.
