UNION PIER — A section of I-94 in Chikaming Township near Union Pier was closed for several hours Wednesday morning, June 26, causing a massive traffic back-up after a wrong-way driver crashed into a semi.

According to the Berrien County Sheriff ’s Office, Diego Flores-Valero, 25, of Chicago, was going the wrong way on I-94, traveling east in the westbound lanes at a high rate of speed at 3:01 a.m. When a sheriff ’s deputy tried to stop him, he crossed the median and began traveling east in the eastbound lane. He then tried to cross the median again and was struck by a semitractor traveling west, police said.

Undersheriff Chuck Heit said Flores-Valero was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, fleeing/eluding police and resisting/obstructing police. He was taken to Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph for observation, Heit said.
