BRIDGMAN — The wins keep coming for St. Joseph’s boys swim team. The Bears defeated rival Bridgman co-op 110-75 on Dec. 20, earning their fourth straight victory.

“The whole team is coming together really well,” first year St. Joseph coach Tim Straub said. “It’s always a fun meet to come to (Bridgman) and swim these guys. A lot of our team knows their team, it’s fun competition.”

The Bears (4-0) swept the relay events, and had a Division 3 state qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Ayden Moyer, Andrew Moyer, Jacob Haunhorst and Logan Borah combined for a time of 1:34.01.

“We’ve been trying to get that since our first meet,” Straub said of his team’s state qualifying time. “The guys were really excited and it’s nice to get it out of the way as early as we could.”

Despite its first loss, Bridgman (2-1) was competitive in every event. In fact, the most competitive event of the night was in the 100 freestyle, where the Bears and Bees ended in a tie.

Ayden Moyer and Justin Beckrow both finished the event with a time of 52.47.

“That was pretty awesome,” Bridgman coach Emily Nannfeldt said. “I was really happy with how the boys swam. They wanted to get out here and get after St. Joe, and they put their all into those times. I’ve been working them hard, they were probably a little bit tired tonight.”

Luke Crawford, Troy Burrow, Kyle Reck and Borah opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay. Jonah Cox gave the Bears a boost, finishing the 200 freestyle at 1:57.63.

Johnathan Plisow scored Bridgman’s first win, completing the 200 individual medley at 2:17.63. He also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17.44.

Setting and meeting goals has been a central focus for Bridgman this season.

“The hard part has been getting them to believe in themselves. That was the challenge in the beginning, getting them to trust me and that I’m in their corner,” Nannfeldt said.

“They are good swimmers and they can do this. They are looking at MISCA (Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association) cuts and are going, ‘Oh, I cam make that!’ They are setting new goals and making new times every week, and it’s so cool to see that every week.”
