BRIDGMAN — Six seniors were honored during the Bridgman High School cooperative girls swim team’s final home meet on Oct. 23.
“I couldn’t have come in with a better group of girls … You are all queens to me,” said first-year coach Emily Nannfeldt after Zoe Bokatzain, Lauren Kilgore, Mackenzie Knowlton, Morgan Pope, Alexa Vota and Sami Weaver were introduced in the middle of a meet with Battle Creek Lakeview won by the Bees 112-71.
The team draws swimmers from Bridgman, Lakeshore, Buchanan, Lake Michigan Catholic, and Niles. Berrien Springs students also are eligible, and Nannfeldt said she’s hoping to add River Valley in 2020.
The Bees have only lost one meet this seaon — to Portage Central.
And that setback was avenged by winning the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference meet on Saturday, Nov. 3.
The Bees finished with 552 points, beating out Portage Central’s 521. St. Joseph was sixth in the 10-team event with 236 points.
Kilgore led Bridgman, winning the 200 individual medley in 2:04.36 to set a conference meet record, and finishing first in the 100 butterfly in 56.34.Vota also set a conference meet record in the 100 breaststroke at 1:06.29.
Kilgore and Vota joined Sophia Korfmacher and Knowlton to win the 200 medley relay in 1:49.87. All four earned first-team all-conference honors, along with Weaver, who was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.36.
St. Joseph had two first team all-conference picks in Cici Strickler, who was second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.30, and diver Kyleigh Meier.
Second-team all-conference selections included Bridgman’s Emily Jotzat, Alicia Delgado, Lucia Gianni and Dani Morill, as well as St. Joseph’s Sylvia Ott.
Nannfeldt said senior Lauren Kilgore has qualified for the state meet in virtually every event she has swam.
As of Senior Night members of two relay squads also had qualified, and there was still a “last-chance” meet to go.
