BRIDGMAN — It took overtime on Jan. 24 to decide a hard-nosed defensive battle between the Bridgman and River Valley girls varsity basketball teams.
The visiting Mustangs rallied from a 23-19 fourth-quarter deficit to grab a 25-23 advantage as Kayanna Lange and Lexi McCarty scored.
Tatyanna Hill kept the Bees alive by scoring seven points down the stretch to forge a Kate 30-28 lead.
Natalyn Heckathorn drew a late foul and sank both ends off a one-and-one opportunity to tie things up at 30-all.
Bridgman scored the first four points of overtime (on a Kaylee Scheffler-Schebel basket (assisted by Melanie Warren) and a pair of Warren free throws.
River Valley pulled within a single point with 1:52 remaining as Heckathorn sank a three-pointer. The Bees answered with four straight points from the foul line (Scheffler-Schebel and Elisa Schmaltz each went 2-for-2).
Another Heckathorn “3” pulled RV within two points of the lead (40-38) at the 1:07 mark, but Bridgman got a clutch lay-up from Scheffler-Schebel (assisted by Hill) with 45 seconds to go and ended up winning 43-38.
“My teammate Tatyanna Hill fed me … She knew exactly when to get it to me,” Scheffler-Schebel said.
“When they crash on me that opens up other parts of the court so I can get it to me teammates more,” Hill noted.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 11-4 lead as Heckathorn scored five points while Kursten Smith, Lange and McCarty also sank field goals.
Hill completed a Bridgman rally early in the third to pull the Bees even at 14-14, and a three-pointer by Schmaltz helped the home team lead 23-19 heading into the fourth quarter.
Hill (17 points and 11 rebounds) and Scheffler-Schebel (14 points) paced the 10-1 Bees.
Heckathorn finished with a game-high 19 points for River Valley. Also contributing points were Lange (9) and McCarty (8 points).
