THREE OAKS — The Bridgman High School girls cross country team came within a point of defending its Berrien County Invitational title on Oct. 3 at River Valley High School.

St. Joseph edged the Bees 53-54 as the Bears' top three runners finished inside the top five.

The 2020 meet included varsity and junior varsity races due to restrictions limiting the amount of runners allowed in each (five varsity runners per team).

Middle school runs also took place, with Bridgman eighth-graders Clara Fast and Andrew Mabry taking first place in the girls and boys races.

"I did not think I was going to be able to kick that much in the end," Mabry said.

"It's a really nice course and a perfect day to run," Fast noted.

Charlie Gibson of River Valley finished fourth in the boys middle school run.

St. Joseph freshman Grace Kelley won the girls high school run with a time of 19:34.03, while Bridgman's Karsyn Stewart came in second in 19:53.

Stewart said she liked the course and went out faster than she usually does.

Also scoring for the Bears were third-place Cecilia Ruchti (20:13) and Olivia Ippel (fifth, 20:50).

Bridgman's Arie Hackett took sixth (21:03), Summer Fast placed 11th, and Jane Kaspar finished 13th.

Coloma took third in the girls high school race with 85 points, Niles placed fourth (93).

Two-time defending county champion Berrien Springs topped St. Joseph 42-49 in the boys high school race.

Lakeshore placed third (88 points), followed by Bridgman (104) and Coloma (109). The Bees were led by Luke Blesy (8th) and John Sanderson (10th).

Lakeshore's Race Bettich won the boys high school race in 15:53.66. Berrien Springs' Ashton Sheline placed second (16:52).
