EAU CLAIRE — The River Valley High School wrestling team claimed two individual championships along with second- and third-place showings at the 46th Annual Burton Richards Tournament held Dec. 15 in Eau Claire.

Andrew Forker achieved a technical fall (16-0) victory over Blaine Shedd of Tekonsha in the 135-pound weight class championship match.

Mustang teammate Chase Elhert (140 pounds) out-scored Brady Dembinski of Gobles 11-7 to finish first in that division.

In the 215-pound championship match Josue Pena of Decatur pinned River Valley’s Braxton Schroeder.

River Valley 103-pounder  Aleric Freehling won by forfeit against Lamarcus Bell of Benton  Harbor in a third-place match.

The Mustangs finished sixth in the 15-team tourney. Also listed on the RV roster were: Ben Patton, Tawnie Bell, Levi Ashby, Jarod Volstorf and Connor Brown.

The top 10 squads were: 1. Decatur 157 points; 2. Buchanan 150; 3. Union City 131 1/2; 4. Benton Harbor 117; 5. Gobles 113; 6. River Valley 86 1/2; 7. Centreville 77; 8. Galesburg-Augusta 76; 9. Bronson 72; 10. Lawrence 66; 11. Cassopolis 61 1/2; 12. GR NorthPointe 51; 13. Tekonsha 46; 14. Dowagiac 42; 15. Eau Claire 24.

The Mustangs opened the 2018-19 campaign with a Dec. 5 home tri-meet that included Marcellus and Eau Claire.

The Marcellus match wasn’t decided until the end, with the visitors prevailing 36-30 (River Valley was missing several wrestlers). Among those winning contested bouts for the home squad were Ben Patton (130 pounds) and Forker (140).

The Mustangs went on to top the Beavers in a forfeit-filled match.
