THREE OAKS — Michigan Lutheran hadn’t lost a BCS White Division girls basketball game going into the Jan. 11 River Valley Winterfest Contest.
The Titans emerged with that streak intact, but the Mustangs made them work for the 49-38 win.
“I’m proud of our effort tonight,” said RV coach Jason Alexander. “We’re going to fix the problems that we have and I think we’re going to be better and move on.”
Lutheran led by a single point (11-10) after one period of play. Tiffany Hyatt sank a pair of three-point shots to keep River Valley close.
A “3” from Haizea Ruiz later pulled the Mustangs even at 21-all. but the Titans answered as scores by Maria Rush and Jessi Jewell helped build a 28-21 half-time lead.
River Valley pulled as close as three (28-25) in a third quarter that saw Taylor Volstorf score a pair of early baskets and Emma Springer convert a pass from Ruiz into two points. But Mara Rugen scored four of ML’s seven points in the stanza to carry the visitrs into quarter number four on top 35-27.
Despite three-point shots from Ruiz and Hyatt, the Titans were able to maintain a lead in the 8- to 10-point range down the stretch. Jewell contributed a three-pointer and a regulation bucket while Rugen sank five foul shots.
She finished with 16 points while Jewell scored 13.
Ruiz led the Mustangs with 15 points, Hyatt finished with 10 points and Volstorf added 8.
Bridgman 40 Coloma 30
The Bridgman varsity girls basketball team topped Coloma 40-30 on Jan. 9.
Sydney Payne paced the visiting Bees with 16 points. Kaitlin Essig scored 9 points and Savvana Tate had 8.
Megan Neubecker paced the Comets with 9 points.
